Default Highway 68, Ohio.

I am planning a ride to the Smokies in May this year and do not want to ride the long, boring I-75 ride through Ohio. Highway 68, which runs from Findlay, Ohio right into and through Kentucky looks like a good alternative. Have any of you Ohioans, or anyone, ridden this road? What is it like? How about the bridge crossing the Ohio at Aberdeen, anyone cross it? Thanks, folks.

Can't say anything about the Ohio section of U.S.68, but we have been planning a trip to Maysville for some time, and as we never use interstates , U. S. 68 from Harrodsburg to Maysville is our route of choice. U. S. 68 is the old Lexington -Maysville turnpike, dating from around 1830. The first toll road in Kentucky. I believe some of the old stone markers still survive today. We were just on 68 from Lex to Harrodsburg a month ago and it's in great shape. If you do take 68 to Harrodsburg, you'll pass through the palisades( the gorge) of the Kentucky River and through Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill.. At Harrodsburg, hook up with U.S.127 to Danville, and at Danville pick up U.S.150. 150 goes into London and 25E, your gateway to the Smokies. 25 E is an excellent road from Corbin all the way through Morristown, mostly four-laned. We ride U.S.25E all the time to Cumberland Gap. You can miss the entire interstate. No Knoxville mess. You can pick up U.S. 25/70 in Newport to U.S.411 and cruise right into Sevierville .

OK, sounds good. This is the way we will go, then. Appreciate the advice.

In Ohio it's not great but it's nice once yu get into Kentucky. You could try US 23 to 8 over to 68. It's a little farther but a pretty ride along the river.

I ride 68 in Ohio often. You must also be alert for Amish in their buggies and on bycicles. Other than that, I find it a nice rode. It is curvey in several sections. The bridge at Aberdeen is fun to ride over.

I use rt 68 often on bike and car, especially from Xenia southward. I have never had any issues with the road at all. You should enjoy the ride.
I am planning the same ride this year also, I think you made a wise choice to stay off 75 in OH. Lousy road and even worse drivers.
Be safe and enjoy
John
