Early recon trip to Morgantown, WV..Mountainfest 2012
Our local Legion riders are planning to attend this years Mountainfest bike week in Morgantown, WV....need some feedback on this event, must see places, ride routes, places to eat/pubs and on the venue itself....I think Steppenwolf and Trace Adkins is performing this year. Thanks for any info on this thread, Best, D. www.wvmountainfest.com

Not a lot of vendors. Last year had an interesting collection of antique bikes. Also have antique bike races at the Waterfront. Triple S HD has a stage set up with some good local bands. Check out the Davisson Brothers band and George Shingleton band. Morgantown is a college town so plenty of bars and eats. Kegleys and Chedders come to mind. The Coal Bucket Saloon and campground on site are adult only. Riding to the south and east of Morgantown is great. Look at Mt Storm, Phillipi, and Parsons as posssible destinations. I'm planning on going again this year.

I live about 20 min from Morgantown and attended every mountainfest until last year. IMO the best part of the whole deal is down at Archie's in Saberton on the east side of Morgantown. At Myan Park they only offer Bud and Bud light, which annoys me.
Here's a site for Morgantown bars and restaurants.

As far as riding, heading east to Kingwood on Rt 7 and then south on Rt 72 to Rt 50 is a really scenic ride.
I can give you more info on some nice short / longer rides in the area as well as cool little beer joints if that's your thing.

If you have the time cross 50 continuing on Rt 72 about 15 miles, and turn left over the Cheat river to St George. It's only maybe 1/2 mile take the right to stay on the "main road" which parallels the other side of the Cheat. Follow this road (keeping right) mostly along the river. This is a nice little road, it will eventually cross the Cheat and intersect with 72 again, near Parsons. Turn left on 72 and stay on it. At the light in Parsons you'll turn left to stay on 72/219. A few miles out of Parsons keep right on 72 which splits off, also called the Hendricks Road. This section of Rt 72 is pretty tight and narrow, and likely will have occasional grit on the pavement so take it easy. But it's a fun road ending up on Rt 32 just south of Canaan Valley.
There are also roads off of 72 like this one along the Cheat river. I took this pic a few years ago on a road off Hendricks road along the river. The rains were just ending that day. FWIW the Cheat is the longest free flowing river east of the Mississippi.

I've always wanted to check out the antique bike race downtown, for some reason I always felt under the weather that morning.

I really enjoy seeing those old motorcycles at the "race" Sunday morning. Prolly be a good idea to catch it while you can, I imagine one of these days if someone gets injured the city will quit allowing it on the streets.
