Default West Coast Alternatives

Hi all,

Next summer my friends are planning a ride down the Oregon Coast. Here is the route that we have in mind:

I know the road to Crater Lake is a great ride, but I was also thinking it would be great to get down to see Yosemite National Park. I don't think we can do both without extending the trip another day or two, which I don't think we can swing. Here is the route I was thinking would work with Yosemite:

So, what's the collective wisdom? Which of these routes is better? What changes would you suggest to either route to make it a better ride?

Keep in mind that most in our group will be riding two up with wives. Thanks team!

On the first route, I would suggest staying on the 101 through Coos Bay, and down to the California coast, through Crescent City, then you can ride through the redwoods to Eureka and Fortuna. Keep going south and ride through the Avenue of the Giants, north of Garberville. Stay on the 101 to Willits, then take hwy 20 E past Clear Lake which will eventually get you to I-5 north of Sacramento.

I did this ride last August and it was one of the best I've ever done.

Thanks Scott. Have you also ridden around Crater Lake and Mt. Shasta? You think that additional stretch of the coast is worth giving up the Crater Lake/Shasta portion of the trip?

I haven't done either, so I really appreciate the input of those who have.

Thanks,

No, sorry - I've never been to Crater Lake, and I didn't go far enough north on I-5 to see Mt. Shasta. I turned west on Hwy 36 at Red Bluff and headed for the coast on my way north, and came back south on the route I outlined for you.
