I would recommend against reservations on ride out. Wasn't hard even the last night in south Dakota. Rooms where not that hard PLUS you want to be able to get off when your body is ready. Plus you have no way to predict what weather you might be dealing with which could impact how far you want to ride. I rode to and from sturgis from MD last year.
I also went to Sturgis this last year. I started in DC. We probably passed each other on the road. I was easy to spot, I was one of the few not on a trailer.
