Florida guys/gals.....Lake Okeechobee

We came around the east side (441) last year, and it was a nice ride. The lake is contained by a pretty high dam most of the way, but there are places to stop and stretch and get on top of the berm to see the lake.
It's an interesting area. The very fertile ground promotes a lot of farming, and the peat bogs are mined in several areas for mulch - something you don't see every day.
Most of the route around the east side is rural roads and although it's a US Highway, it's not a high speed route - it goes through several small farming towns and the roadway is not as wide as you might expect - more like a state highway.
Belle Glade has gas and food. There is an airboat outpost along Hwy 27 that is a good stop with a park, restaurant, and lots of airboats.
Enjoy!

+1 on that. I tried finding that lake last year while in Fort Myers Beach. Me and my buddy had a day off from the families and rented two SGs from FMHD and they told us about this awesome lake and great ride. We got so lost and saw a sign for Miami and went there instead. What a mistake, never made it to the beach but we enjoyed our ride and SGs

Six of one, half dozen of the other. 27 is 4 lane mostly and 441 is two lane. If you go down 27 stop here and take a break. http://www.rolandmartinmarina.com/tiki_bar.php
