Theres a holiday inn and sleep inn by the airport. This allows easy access on the 794 to the HD museum.
We did the steel toes tour which included a tour of the motor factory.

Iron Horse is right across from the museum. It is pricey though. Plenty of places downtown. If you get out by the airport the prices drop, but there is some major construction going on so you would have to deal with that. If you have any questions let me know as I live in the City. Also I would recommend comming up the Mississippi River and cutting over in Prairie Du Chien. Just a little south of Madison is New Glarus which has a great brewery so stop in a have one. I would avoid riding up central IL at all costs. Used to be stationed in MO and hated that drive/ride.

Cheapest motels would be like 13th street and College or 13th and Rawson. Gets you off the freeway just as the construction gets nuts. Use city streets to get to the museum. This area is not hard to navigate. The area around the museum makes me a bit nervous as far as how safe my belongings are. I know the Iron Horse is a good place but check the cost.

A month ago, we stayed here: http://www.hotelofthearts.com/ - we parked on the sidewalk next to the front door (after asking if it was ok)

It is about a mile north of the Museum - actually on the same road.

Downtown is fun as was:
* steel toe tour
* museum tour
* casino
* miller brewing tour
* Pabst mansion tour
* Kettle Moraine Forest ride
* Downtown brew pubs (lots of them)

Default have fun

Good day
Below is a link to the state roads of wisconsin with good descriptions and suggestions of where to stop. You might want to take 67 from sw wisconsin . It turns north and goes just west of Milwaukee. Where 67 and 59 meet there is an old roadhouse callehttp://www.statetrunktour.com/index.phpd suhlmers. Great old place with a nice greasy b urger. Go on on 67 and just before the interstate there is Wisconsin Harley in Oconomowoc. good place. Suggest you then go east on 18 or any other route . The interstate in to Milwaukee is easy. See the Miller stadium
In Milwaukee, try Real Chili near the Marquette Campus . You will thank me and go back for more. Downtown Milwaukee has some nice bars.
if you have questions ask
