Default Spur of the moment 5000 mi. Trip

We are falling in with two other couples to ride from So. Ill. to So. Cal and then up the coast on the PCH. We just decided to go and are leaving on Thursday. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to see and do out there and also anything or place we should avoid. None of us has ever been out there.
thanks RB

I like the coast although it can be cold in the summer. So have some options in your travel bag for riding. Big Sur, Monterey Aquarium, Santa Cruz Boardwalk, or even catch a SF Giants game at the ATT Park. That park is voted as one of the very best in the USA. While in "the city" look at golden gate bridge. Sf has some of the best places to eat. Depending upon how far your traveling north determines the best route east. Tioga pass through Yosemite is one of the best there is. Ebbetts is good but way less traffic.

If you go north into Oregon, crater lake is supposed to be one of the mist beautiful places in US. I've never been, but will someday...

I envy you. I wish I could get the time off work. Some of the best trips I've taken have been to just pick a direction and go. Im sure you will see all kinds of awesome things. Have fun.

Thanks guys for the ideas. I am pretty excited about the trip but could have used a little more time to get bike ready and to make some arrangements, but we are going either way.
I didn't need to take off work for 18 days and I sure didn't have the money but I do have plastic and I am not getting any younger I figured it was a once in a lifetime trip.
thanks RB
