Default Cherokee, NC area

Thinking about heading up to Cherokee area for a week or so. The wife and I wanting to find sort of a base of operation to hang out and then do some day rides of the area. Looking at maybe Cherokee, Bryson City, Waynesville, or maybe, Franklin. Would like to stay somewhere convenient to eating places, maybe alittle walk a round shopping for the wife, etc. Suggestions appreciated. We'll be coming in from West TN. Thanks.

Cherokee is not my favorite place, although some like it. A bit too trashy for me. Gatlinburg is a good place for walking and shopping and has good restaurants. I like Townsend, but only because it's quiet and no crowds. A lot of folks like Bryson City, and the Fryemont Inn (www.fryemontinn.com) is very bike friendly, high quality, and affordable. More of a resort type of place and feels much more special than a chain hotel. A little bit of shopping available in Bryson City too, with a few decent restaurants.

Like the preacher, I'm not a fan of Cherokee. Probably wouldn't ever go there if it wasn't on the way to so many places for us.

Hwy 28 to Highlands, NC is a great ride. Very picturesque, with some twisties thrown in. Decent Bar-B-Q in Highlands, but I didn't eat anything to write home about.

I can add more stuff in the area as I think about it.

Bryson city has some walking around stuff but I never got to it. I've stayed at the Hill Top. Old and cheap with a biker discount. When you come out in the morning, there will be a towel on the seat of your bike. Use it to dry the seat, etc. Of course, I like it a little on the trashy side.
We based outside of Maggie Valley off of 19 last time. Spent a week in a two bedroom house.

I stayed in Cherokee in years past. Very few places to eat, and they don't care if you drop dead, as long as your out of the way. It's Maggie Valley now.

I would suggest Maggie Valley as well. Not much shopping but the whole area is biker friendly and you have Wheels Thru Time to check out.

Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are too crowded and the traffic is terrible this time of year. Good food can be found dang near anywhere you just have to look around. I always look for work trucks or rigs. Working folks know the best places to eat and those with the best prices...lol And remember it isn't the big city so thew best places to eat don't always come with a white tablecloth and a stuffy waiter...lol

When we stayed last year this is the house we rented for a week. Don't come home drunk, the drive way is a mountain climb in itself. Two bedrooms with garage for $325.00 a week.
