It will take a day or so just to fight your way through the LIE. Having driven from the that part of the country to the midwest numerous times I would use the interstate to get west of the Mississippi then look for scenery. Save your time for riding the scencic roads in the Black Hills, head over to Heulet, WY maybe head further west to Cody and ride the Joseph Scenic byway. The Beartooth pass is worth the trip.

A lot of the direct US routes such as rt 6 and rt 20 run too close to the great lakes and heavier populated areas that will slow you down too much.
My son just went to Wisconsin for a two week vacation in his pickup. It took two days to get that far on the interstate. Sturigs is about another 500 miles. So three days out, three back if you Interstate it, 14 - 6 = 8 days. Bike can turn 3 days into 4.5 to 5 days out. Then your left with 4 days there.
Only you know how many days you want to stay in Sturgis or just riding out west. So I would I it past Chicago at the least or figure how many miles you can cover in one day on a bike then take the US routes from that point.
Let us now what you did and how it went.
