September was very good when I rode R66 Chicago-LA in '08 , less traffic and the weather was great and not so damn hot except for the desert areas (115F) and a little wet and windy when the hurricane Ike hit us in S:t Louis and a little chilly (27F) mornings in elevated areas like Santa Fe NM but the temps raised quickly and stayed in the 80:s every day. It was a great and fun ride and it took 18 days for me and I tried to ride as much of the old route as possible with sidetrips in between such as Four Corners , Grand Canyon and of course Las Vegas.

Have a nice trip

I have learned that June is still a little bit wet, and August is way TOO warm in the desert (125F in Mohave when I crossed it).
I have the plan to ride Route66 this year, starting in Mid-July from Chicago.
Let us know what is your plan.

I went RT66 in July year before last and the thing I remember most is it was HOT! Got to 112 degrees. Parts of Rt 66 run right along RT 40. If it has rained be careful of the red mud that washes across the road. It's only about 1/2 " thick but it like hitting black ice. I won't say how I know. We road from NM to AK and got bored and headed south to Florida

Well looking at the feedback so far thinking generally July is the better month for the trip to try and avoid the rains and only when in the desert will the temps really rise. Guess there is no perfect time as you can't book the weather

Default Start of trip

Just remember to start your trip from Chicago with double yolk eggs with sausage and thick toast at Lou Mitchell's on Jackson

Been researching this a great deal and think we will set off first week in September, hopefully will still be warm but not hit too much rain. And yes riskmanager, we will start out from Lou Mitchell's
Been fired up as we have a television 4 part program running now of a guy called Billy Connolly (Scottish comedian) riding Route 66 on his trike

Another valuable resource is the travel guide by Jerry McClanahan.

http://www.amazon.com/Route-66-EZ66-...7042526&sr=8-1

Jerry is a walking encyclopedia of Route 66 and a very accomplished artist. His art revolves around Route 66. We've used his guide twice now on our travels on the Mother Road. He lives in Chandler, OK and his phone number is in the book. Give him a call when you get close to Chandler and take the time to visit with him and visit his gallery. Better yet, take him to lunch or dinner at the cafe in downtown Chandler.

Can't get that book or Route 66 Dining & Lodging Guide here in the UK.

Am new to USA and been living here in AZ for a year.

I would do it in September and make sure to take in a lot of the sights of the southern half of Utah as well.
