When you get to the part of your planning when you are looking for suggestions on traveling in Maine, throw the question out to us Mainers - we'll help ya out or at least give you our opinion.
Good luck with NYC, travel safe.

You will avoid the city totally. One word of warning. Don't do it during the peak traffic times or your trip will be lengthened greatly. Don't use Rt. 95 down or back up. Computerized software always routes you that way and it is the worst way to go unless you have to for some reason.

Missing traffic, Sandy Hook to Portsmouth, NH would be a five to six hour trip.
I am trying to hit all of the Mid Atlantic/New England states on this trip so I need to go through Rhode Island and we want to ride out to Cape Cod before going to Boston. I may be crazy (nothing new to those who know me) but I have decided to go up Long Island and take the Orient Point Ferry. I will probably never have the opportunity to go that route again and I would like to see it. Now I am trying to decide which way to go up LI.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.
