My Harley on a Cruise Ship
#62
Just retruned from a 9 night Carribean cruise aboard Explorer of the Seas with my bike. Rode in Bermuda, St Maarten, St Thomas & San Juan. Steve Wallach, Pres. of ETA Motorcycle Cruises has this runnin like a well oiled machine & kept things super organized. The crew (*****, head of security) on Explorer was very helpful & accomodating when we disemarked & reboarded at each port. We had a total of 27 bikes on board, some ran solo & some 2 up. All rides were escorted by the the local MC or police so we really kept moving. For the most part, no lights, no stop signs, no delays. The riding experience on each island was very different from each other and the locals were happy to see us there. Actually lined the streets to welcome us as we ran by horns blairing & engines rev'n. Just made the experience a bit more special. Everyone in the group was friendly & helpful as usual when most bikers get together with a common goal in mind. Met some great new friends in the process as an added bonus to a great experience
Not to worry, nobody touches your bike (loading or unloading) except you. The ship provided wheel chocks & we didn't even need to strap the bikes down to secure them. We each received a crew pass which allowed us access down to where the bikes were staged whenever we wanted.
This is definately something to experience at least once if you can. Check out www.cruise-eta.com for more info

I brought up this idea with a group I ride with recently and was told of someone who found the island roads to be in horrible condition. I tend to take such third party reviews with a grain of salt.
Can those of you who have actually taken one of the cruises and ridden your bke comment on the quality of the roads? Are there island you would avoid if you did it again. Or perhaps those islands you enjoyed so much you want to go back?

I cruised aboard Royal Carribean for 9 nights 4/12-4/21/12
Bermuda was beautiful, roads were fine and the people were incredibly welcoming
St Maarten on the other hand had terrible roads with pot holes and speed bumps
St Thomas roads were fine, very chanllenging ride with steep hills and sharp switchbacks, great riding experience but spent most of the day in 1st & 2nd gear
San Juan was great riding as well with special task force motorcade escorting us all the way.
I will definately do it again but would like to ride different islands just for the experiences. if anything, I would avoid St Maarten if possible but I wouldn't let that sway me if that island had to be included in my next trip
