Sacramento to Las Vegas
This Spring, April 20th to be exact, looking to go from Sacramento, actually, Jackson, CA to Las Vegas, NV. Want to go over the mountains and run the back side of the Sierra. Time is really not an issue as we, my brother and I, will take our time and enjoy the journey.
Plan to head east on HWY 88 to HWY 89 south into Markleville, CA then South 395 to HWY 120 east to HWY 6 east and the HWY 95 south into Las Vegas.
Any advise for us? Gas along the way? Good eats? We both have 2006 Road King Classic bikes.
Thanks,
Mark

I go between Vegas, Gardnerville and Valley Springs, CA quite a bit.
You picked a great route with some fantastic roads. Hope you like cornering!
I would be a little worried about snow though. Even in April you could have some problems on 89 as it goes up to about 9000 feet. Also 120 & 6.
I'd be more inclined to head a little farther south on 395 and pick up 168 at Big Pine to 266 to 95.
There are plenty of places for gas and food. There is a little bar in Markleeville that is a good stop. If you bypass 89 and stay on 88 to 395 there is the Iron Horse on 395 Just coming down the hill into Topaz. Great burgers.
Ton's of places on 395 to stop and eat. Also some pretty scenic spots for photos.
120 to 6 is going to be pretty desolate. Gas up before you leave 395. 95 to Vegas sucks as well but there are some interesting mining towns along the way. Watch out for high winds and fast trucks. oh, and Vegas traffic!

While I'm from back East, I've been on the roads you mentioned quite a few times over the years on vacation. I would listen to Chilipepper about Rt. 89 especially that time of year, it can be iffy. When headed for Vegas make sure you do gas up just south of Mono Lake before getting onto 120. i don't think there's any place between there and Tonopah. By the way, there's a great little Mexican restruant in Tonopah. Wish I was going with my wife to her sister's in Sac in April, I'd be tempted to rent and cruise along. Have a great trip.
