Basye Virginia
We have friends that have a time share the can get in Basye, Va. We know about the skyline drive at Front Royal. Was wondering what other day trips out of Basye we could do. Was thinking a day up to Gettysburg and stay the night. Any other curvy-winding roads anyone can recommend. Basye is in the Appalachians. Got to be some great roads to ride. Please help us out with any suggestions!!!!!!!!!1

The Battel of Bull Run was in Manassa, great Civil War ground, although it now is completley sided by big box development and townhouses (when I was a kid there inthe 70's it was a nice natural area)

Going down the Blue Ridge Parkway which goes through to TN is a nice ride.

Check out some stops just off of the parkway including Crabtree Falls

(Not, that have advertised on their site about going to Wintergreen Resort. Wintergreen is NOt motorcycle friendly. Will not allow a non property holder on site on a bike. Needless to say, when the guard stopped us at the gate, as we wanted to go in and look at purchasing a condo, we turned around and never went back)
Also, the surrender ground for the Civil War are in central Virginia

Also, right on the Blue Ridge Parkway is the Peaks of Otter Lodge. Nice for an overnight, or just for the restaurant. If you're into climbing, Climb to the top of Flat Top there.

Right on the parkway, a little ways north of Peaks of Otter (maybe 15 miles or so, if memory serves me correctly) is a little restaurant and gift shop, Otter Creek. Great little trails to walk around onthe creek. Good food (nothing fancy)

I grew up in the Central Va. area. As things come back to me, I will post more.

Ooops, I posted the wrong link for Bull Run. It's called the Manassas National Battlefield Park. (But, that other park looks interesting for things to do)

Any of the roads going west into West Virginia are great day rides from Basye. Rt 259 through Lost City and Lost River. Rt 55 over to Moorefield then down to Petersburg, then take 55/28 by Seneca Rocks and come back on US33 thru Franklin. Lots of tight mountain curves and nice valleys. Very scenic. Another good one is US 33 to Elkins and come back on US 250 thru Monterey. Can't go wrong on any of those roads!!

Ditto on the Seneca Rocks day Ride, Plus probably hit the Blue Ridge Parkway down to at least Roanoke area. Might make it a full day and hit Mabry Mill south of Roanoke on the Parkway (milepost 175)
Good location where you're going, so just about any road will be good..
The Mountians run North to South, so going west you'll cross the "ridges" or you can run the "valleys"

+1 On Seneca Rocks
There is a small general store/restaurant/"tourist trap" right next to Smoke Hole Caverns there. The owner provides motorcycle tours to campers at the camp site. Whenever we are in the area, we stop by, he always gives us great route suggestions that are off the beaten path and usually not even on a map anywhere!

There is a little diner right at Basye called "Hot Plates Cafe". Sometime they have live bands there on Sat. night. Haven't been there for a while but it was good. There is a good road to take if you leave Basye and go to Orkney Springs. Turn left at the post office, follow road for approx 10-15 miles. This will take you to Rt 259. Can go left into Broadway or left into WV. Either way it is good riding. Just get a map and you can make a big circle and get back to Basye. There is a good diner in Woodstock, about 25 miles from Basye, called Candy's Diner. On the north end of town beside the Chev. dealer. Good Mexican rest. on the north end of Mt Jackson, just can't remember the name now. It is located next to a laundry mat. Hank's rest. is good. Located east of Harrisonburg, Va on Rt 33 about 15 miles. If I think of anymore, will let you know.
