Default Farthest ride on Sportster and advice for trip to C.A.

What is the farthest anyone has rode on a sportster (mines a iron 883)? Because I plan to travel from Phoenix, A.Z. to Santa Monica, C.A. which is about a 6 hour drive on the I-10 west till it ends. I have driven in my car many times on this trip and know the roads well. I am wondering what you guys thought about this and if it would be a good idea/possible.

Myself on an electra glide (1976 year model) and two friends on Sportsters (1972 and 1975 year models) rode from Raleigh, NC to California in 1977. We were gone 16 days and traveled approximately 7,000 miles.

I rode from San Diego, CA to Grass Valley, Ca in 8 hours only to stop for fuel and had no problems. Did it on a 94 sporty. The one in my pics. No need for windshield either

If you can for an hour at a time (and you should know that by now), just break up the trip into 6 one-hour rides.

Good luck!

I rode my 57 Sporty to Ca from Ct in 1970. I was with 3 others. We did about 300 miles a day. Best time of my life. I'll bet I can still do it, but my Dyna is much more comfortable.

In May of 2009, I rode my 1999 XL883 from CA to VA and back, 6,000 miles in 9 days. Then later that same year, I rode from CA to Sturgis, SD and back again for a total of 4,000 miles. No windshields and no rubber motor mounts either, but I do use a full face helmet. I normally travel around about 500 to 600 miles a day or so at anywhere from around about 80 to 90 MPH and with the 3.3 gallon tank I have to stop about every 100 to 120 miles or so for gas, depending on headwinds and uphill grades, just to be safe out in the less populated areas. By now, you should know your range or limit of how far you can go on a full tank of gas. I have been going out to Cottonwood, AZ from Redondo Beach, CA for the last 4 years to see the Back Street Choppers SmokeOut West shows. It is almost exactly 500 miles to get there from where I live and it takes about 10 hours or so as I stop for breakfast and lunch. The longest I have gone is about 1,200 miles in one sitting, from when I first woke up to when I finally went to sleep. Fill up with gas and start riding, repeat as often as necessary to get to where you want to go! Good luck with your trip and ride safe out there. It is a good idea and it is possible. Hey, IronMan420. When you finally get to Santa Monica, have someone show you the way to the Rock Store in Malibu if you like the twisty roads, or through the Santa Monica mountains on the Angeles Crest Highway up to Newcomb’s ranch. Beautiful scenery either way! The AZ scenery has its own beauty too! Kingman, Prescott, Sedona, Red Rock, Cottonwood, Camp Verde, Flagstaff and Jerome are all places that I have gone to many times to visit and the ride is always a nice enjoyable one. Take care!
