Riding a motorcycle up the Dalton Highway to the artic ocean is on my bucket short list. However, I would not even consider riding my beautiful Ultra up that road. The wear and tear and danger is not worth it. Any make of motorcycle could make it to Prudhoe Bay (and has) if the conditions are favorable, but I would not do it without a dual purpose motorcycle with the proper farkles for that type of environment.
The calcium chloride coupled with rain or water being sprayed by water trucks to control dust, turns the road into a snot like substance. It can snow year round (and does), especially crossing the Brooks Range. If you have a flat that cannot be repaired, you are screwed. Break down, and the cost of a tow is off the charts.
I'm going to purchase either a KLR 650, Suzuki V-Strom 650, or a BMW F650 for the trip. You can get all the information you ever wanted on the subject at: www.advrider.com
