Colorado Trip - What do you think?

If missing Denver is what you want to do that will be easy. There are many ways to do that but choosing one will depend on how much time you have. Colorado is a motorcycle riding mecca.
1) Take the route planned but stay in Golden or Lakewood in a hotel off of I70.Take I70 to I25 then I25 north to Wyoming. You will hit I25 just north of Denver.
2) Take 550 out of Durango to Montrose.Take 50 east to 285 north. When you get to Buena Vista, take 24 north to Leadville. Either stay on 24 to Vail or take 91 to the I70 freeway. Take I70 to I25 and follow no.1 directions to Wyoming or when you get to the C470 interchange look for the sign for 6th Ave to Golden. Get off and follow to the intersection of 6th, 119 and 58th St. Turn left (6th) and stay on 6th. Follow thru Blackhawk to Nederland. In Nederland you will come to a circle at the end of town. You can go either to Estes Park or to Boulder. If you go to Estes Park, when you get there go east on 34 and that will take you to I25 up in Loveland. Go north on I25 to Wyoming. If you go to Boulder you will have to go thru town but stay on 36 and you will eventually hit I25 on the north side of town. Go north to Wyoming. You can figure an extra 3/4 of a day either way. Personally I would go to Loveland.
If time is a factor, take you original route. You could make up many different routes. Get out your HOG touring handbook if you have one. Colorado is highlighted pretty well. I have personally ridden all of these roads and like all of them. Check out www.motorcyclecolorado.com. They have a pretty good selection of roads to review. Also, always have your rain gear ready while riding in Colorado. You could hit thunderstorms at almost any time but usually after noon in the mountains and out east.

Have a great evening.
FYI,
Just finished an 8,073 mile seven week ride to Laconia. When I get back from Sturgis, will provide site with pictures of both trips. Fantastic time and trip.

Avoid Colorado (NE part) if at all possible. I had a Harley (02 Dyna Low Rider) vs. deer accident on May 30 (just before noon). The bike was totaled, the deer was killed and I was bruised and had road rash... but came out surprisingly well all things considered.
The main problem: I was ticketed for leaving the scene of the accident (the only property damage was to my bike- the only injury was to myself... not counting the deer). A passing motorist offered to help me... being that I was 10 miles from anything and bleeding and limping, I would have been foolish to not accept help.
I reported the accident 47 min. later, after being driven in to Ft. Morgan and cleaning up (this was before a visit to the ER).
The ticket was a summons-meaning that I couldn't even pay this state endorsed extortion by mail. Instead, they wanted me to drive 900 miles to appear before the judge.
In the end, I hired an attorney- because $700 is cheaper than the $350 plus that it would cost to drive out (gas is expensive without a bike) to CO... plus I'm sure a "contempt of court" charge is pricey... so I felt this was my best option.
I would love it if people would boycott CO ... if not don't expect fair treatment if anything unfortunate happens while riding through the state.

Always smart to check CDOT before traveling for these things. They only have so many months per year to fix mounain roads, so it does have to interfere with tourist season.

May I suggest a short but very nice ride if you find yourself in Golden longer than you planned. If you have an extra 2-3 hours, you could leave Golden and take Highway 6 thru the canyon to Blackhawk. The ride is fun, curvy and great scenery. It only takes 30 minutes to Blackhawk where you could grab a buffet at one of the casinos (best buffets are the Lodge Casino and the Ameristar Casino) and then drive back. I try to take that little "trip" a couple times a month. Ride safe.

This is quite an unfortunate incident ,and yes, pretty dumb. Glad you made it through o.k. But it's not a good reason to boycott Colorado and deprive yourself of some of the best riding available. I'm sorry you had to experience that and I would be pissed myself. Some cops are real a-holes. The thing is, that happens everywhere, especially if they know you're from out of town. Doesn't make it right though. Don't judge the masses by what one jerkoff does to you.
You are right with that...a lot of people were ready to lend a helping hand. It is unfortunate that I found none in law enforcement nor the Morgan Co. court.
The real kicker is I am a CO native (live in Nebraska now). Loved riding in CO and rode in about every corner of the state.
CR-42-4-1601-1607 though are legislative pieces that people should be aware of-especially if coming in from out of state. Like most, they are poorly written laws that are open to interpretation of LE and give too much in the way of powers of discretion to a particular cop (or county).
Unlike most states, the immediacy required for accident reporting does not take in to account a lot of factors- trauma for one. I hope no one on here ever has the experience of having a high speed accident with a deer (or anything else). I can attest that linear thinking goes out the window after something like this- it would be nice if the state would recognize that fact.
For those interested, contact state Senator Greg Brophy. He responded to me regarding this a few weeks ago (and was on the committee that submitted these bills), and might be in a position to amend the wording so what happened to me does not happen again.
People should report accidents, but there needs to be some consideration given to one who was badly (or traumatically) injured in an accident- and as it is now, there is no leeway given.
