PA turnpike riding

Agree with Ridewva. If you have a full day or more to make the ride, Rt 30 would be great. I79 to I 68 to I 81 to Chamberburg then 30 into Gettysburg is an ok ride. All interstate, except for the last 30 miles, and less travelled than the Pa pike, but I always feel it takes longer. Maybe because of those husge hills you go up and down throughout the trip.

Someone mentioned that you go to Morgantown to 68 through Cumberland to 70 into Frederick and then up 15. That is nice, but a really nice ride that is very scenic would be when you go through Cumberland on 68 when you get to the Hancock, MD area where it meets 70.
Take 70 North toward Breezewood up about a mile and a half and exit onto 522 North, run that up through Mercersburg, PA to Rt. 30 toward Chambersburg and across the mountain to Gettysburg.
That is a very nice ride and lots of scenery. When you go up the mountain on Rt.30 there is a really cool little restaurant/bar called Mountain House Bar and Grill or something like that. On the weekends there are loads of bikes and usally a band playing. I have ridden up there for lunch from Fredericksburg, VA. I think you will like this way much better than dealing with the PA Turnpike Death Wish. Enjoy your ride and Ride Safe!!!!!!

I ride the eastern half of the turnpike often, and sometimes to Pittsburgh, not a bad road, sometimes a lot of traffic, and a bunch of trucks almost any time of day or night. I use it only when in a hurry though, usually work related.
When not in a hurry, Rt. 30 is a good choice, a heck of a lot more scenic, and definately more enjoyable.
If you're not in a hurry, and want to enjoy the ride and scenery, stay off the turnpike.
But to actually answer your question, I've never felt uncomfortable on the turnpike.

If you don't mind a very fast pace and alot of semis the pike will get you there quickly. All in all the road is good. It does wind you through some nice country but you don't have time to enjoy it if you are keeping up with traffic. I'm not one for Interstate riding unless I am in a hurry or there is no other option.
I guess taking the pike all depends on your objective...get there fast or lean back and cruise?

Lots of ways. Be simple
well, there are sure a lot of ways from there to here. I lived in PA and commuted to Frederick, MD. Turnpike is not bad, but if you are not seasoned hang on tight. US 30 is good, scenic and a nice route right to Gettysburg. I've done 30 from Pitt. to Gettysburg many times. Enjoy. Saddle time is about 5 hours from Pitt, 3.5 hours from Johnstown.
