I agree with BigJfxdwg. A trip through the Smokey Mountains is the way to do it. And no trip to the region is complete without draggin' some tailpipe on the Tail of the Dragon (US-129)!

If you can make the miles I would consider the Rockies on up to Banff and Jasper and save the Smokies trip for the Fall season.

"Summer in the Rockies"? We have narrow seasons here, summer (July and Aug) is crowded with kids and campers, its great, it beautiful, but it is a busy park. A long way for him to come in the tourist season. Spring or fall, when the kids are in school is better. In the spring you just have to avoid the waking, hungry Grizzly Bears, and in the fall, there are those rutting Wapitis. (elk)

Smokies in the fall is beyond beautiful.

I love the Mission statement: Direction, not destination. Thats the way we sail, our boat is Meander because we do!

I made the 14000 mile trip up to Alaska last summer. Mid July to mid August. The Rockies was one of the best parts of the trip from New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and on into Canada. I am ready to do it again but I've got a few other directions to head in first.

It is a lot of miles but I was looking at Montana and Canada as a good trip if the bike is ready it should make the trip without stopping over for maintenance or tires.

Wyoming would be hard to resist but that may add too many miles and could realistically put the time frame out of reach.

What ever you decide let us know. Have a nice trip.

I took a 10 day trip to Sturgis in 2006 and by the time I decided where I was going I ended up riding 7800 miles before I made it home.

I am thinking about returning to Alaska on my days off.

Last time I had 28 days but I figure I can do it in a few trips with my regular 10 days off work if I fly back to work with a two way ticket and leave the bike at the Harley shops.

Probably take the Marine highway next time.

Default northwest?

you could ride out route 2 along the northern border, then go to Brittish Columbia, Washington, and Oregon it might be a little tight for time but you can ease along for a few days and then blast back on the interstates if you get pressed.

Smokies and tail of the dragon are great too, but personally I'd rather hit them in fall they are awesome in the fall.

If you've never been to the Keys, that's something different. Try going down the gulf coast and through the everglades.
