Thats a challenge! Yikes, the roads they are a plenty. I certainly understand the desire to stay clear of the superslab. I think ya may like Rt 209 from the Delaware Water Gap rec area all the way out to just north of Harrisburg Pa. Then scout for Rt . 15 through Gettysburg Pa. strait through to frederick Md. (this is sorta the Dutch country area) Rt. 340 goes all the way into Front Royal Va. at the north end of the park. By the way, 340 which runs N and S parallel to the park is a great alternate ride if ya tire of the Skyline Drive and the 30 mph(sorry off topic) . You'd have to be creative making it to 209 from NYC. I know Rt. 30 between York and Chambersburg Pa. can get real congested (my experiences there) and leave ya wishing for the I-81 tarmac.
If anyone has any really cool rural suggestions I'd be game myself, Im only 90 mi. north of NYC and always seeking new adventure.

Im curious, shouldnt there be a few more decimal points in those figures the GPS came up with. Adds up to thousands of miles for a 5 hour trip. I think could take you maybee 7/8th to Hawaii.. Gotta love those mapquest things sometimes. Inforit: 81 will do ya just fine.

If you set the trip at 0 when you start....just turn when you reach the mile mark. This list was from a garmin unit. Each line is the direction the unit makes. It gives you advance notice of upcoming turns and I have found it to be very accurate. You can probably edit out 2/3 of the calls to make it a little easier to map the route. I was being lazy.

Rt. 11 is a nice ride. Small towns with decent distance between them. Rt. 340 is a similar road. Very relaxing ride either way. I think taking Rt. 15 out of PA and into MD is a good choice. You can follow Rt 15 all the way to Rt 340. Just watch the signs in Frederick, MD. This is where Rt 15 splits. If you stay straight or bear left, it will turn into I-270S towards DC. But there are signs advising you to take the RIGHT exit to Rt 15/Rt340. The whole trip is signed very well.

If you are ready for a break around Winchester, Grove's HD just opened a new shop last year. Very nice. Its right off of Rt. 50 (Millwood Pike). Rt. 340 intersects Rt. 50. Its just about 5 miles or so west of that intersection. You can also get to Rt 50 from Rt 11, you'll just have to go east. Its not far at all from either junction.

80 to 81 sounds like a good move. I did that run last year in a cager. The ride over the mountains was nice. It would be awesome on a bike. Once into Maryland on 81, you can take 70 East and pick up 340 West at Frederick. The rest is smooth sailing to Front Royal...Have a great ride!!!

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like I will be taking 78 to 81 to 15 to 340. I am heading further down to Smokey Mountains through Blue Ridge Pkwy. On the way back to NY I would like to take the eastern roads. I was thinking Ocean Highway 17 up north towards NY. Anyone know or had experience riding on that highway? Any other roads you can think of that I can take that are more scenic.
Thanks.
