Where to stay in Sturgis?

This is my recommendation to visitors who only have a couple days ... There are many more things to see and do but I'd recommend these as the highlights. Riding at night is treacherous at best.
This order would be the least backtracking and best use of your time in the central/southern hills - Sylvan Lake, Needles Hwy, MT Coolidge Lookout ( if you have time, takes about 20 min), S entrance Wildlife Loop, Visitor Center (highly recommended for the movie - about 30-40 min stop) at the N Wildlife loop then Iron Mt. Road (traveling S to N you see Mt Rushmore thru the tunnels) ending at MT Rushmore. We like to stop at Elk Haven on Iron Mt Road, great porch and good, reasonable food.
Second day for the northern hills DeadwoodSturgis/Spearfish area - The Franklin Hotel is old historic cool, the room we were in was older, clean but older. The Steakhouse in the lower level was great both times I've been there. Check out the Scott Jacobs gallery a couple blocks down on the same side of the street, he's the official HD artist, ran the cannonball and has about 10 vintage bikes there. Main St is a fun place for night life. Start at the Spearfish Canyon - south to north, up 85 to 34/24 to Aladdin then on to Devil's Tower, back on I-90 for a drive through of Sturgis (really not much to see) then back to Deadwood for dinner and nightlife/entertainment.

I agree that if you're going in a "on-rally" date you may as well stay in Sturgis.
We stayed there (many years ago) during the rally but had made reservations well in advance.
We've also stayed in Rapid City, Hill City, Deadwood, Spearfish and even as far west as Sundance, WY.
In June you should be able to get rooms most anywhere so it pretty much depends on where you want to go, see and do and I'd suggest staying multiple locations so you can do shorter "day rides" unless you just like to ride more miles.
Hill City is closer to Mt Rushmore & Crazy Horse memorials.
Sundance, WY is a shorter distance to the Devil's Tower.
My personal preference(s) would be staying in either Deadwood or Spearfish....but that's just me.
Just be sure that you have proper and adequate riding gear as the changing weather can be both rapid and severe and you have to keep an eye on forecasts and the sky.

Since I'll be coming in from
the East through Iowa I'm thinking I'd stop in Wall, ride the Badlands, and spend that 1st
night in that area. Days 2 and 3 move to a closer/central area to take in all the riding from a central place. Hill City is being mentioned quite a bit by others. Was told that June is full of family vacationers, RV's, and kids?
