I use MyRouteApp to plan my routes and save them in a gpx file.
I then load the tracks in my Zumo XT using the gpx files in either Garmin BaseCamp or Garmin MapSource

MyRoute-app (MRA) has already been mentioned. MRA Routeplanner is a decent planner - functional but rudimentary. The most capable, complete route/trip planner that I'm aware of is Furkot. Furkot is probably one of he best - if not the best - planners for simple, quick routes to complex trip planning. Furkot is very well documented. A good place to to start...
What Furkot is good for?
Furkot integration/interoperability with other navigation apps/sites, lodging/booking, government resources (FHA, parks, recreation), etc. etc. is pretty impressive.
For those interested in Android/iOS navigation apps, then 2 apps come to mind... MRA Next and Scenic. MRA Navigation is the current MRA offering. However, MRA Next is currently in beta testing and is scheduled to be fully rolled out (and replace MRA Navigation) early this year. MRA Next supports both Android and iOS and will support both Android Auto and CarPlay. MRA Next has the potential to become one of the best - if not the best - navigation apps available based on what I'm seeing so far in the beta. MRA Next will have stiff competition for the title though, because Scenic, in my mind, currently holds the crown. In the end it may be a tie when it comes to which is best. Scenic currently only supports iOS/CarPlay. However, Android support is supposed to arrive this year. Scenic doesn't have it's own route planner (so there's no Scenic ecosystem), but it doesn't need to. Scenic integrates very well with Furkot (and other planners) making having it's own planner unnecessary. It's already married up to the most capable route planner available.
Anyway... My 2 cents on worthwhile route/trip planners and navigations apps to look into.

It was never great, but somehow they have managed to make it worse. From the same company that delivers a brand new bike with out of dat dealer locations loaded!
