It was absolutely stunning when we rode west through the Rockies at the end of September of '21. We took US24 out of Colorado Springs, then 92 through Independence Pass and Aspen before hooking into I-70. Fortunately weather was fantastic only cooling a bit in the higher altitudes.
When I was up at the top of the summit and pulled over to take a picture… There was a road there That went up the mountain even further… I wondered where it went… Now I know… Red Mountain town…
If you go off roading There are some interesting ghost town that were once mining towns
Eureka, Animas, Red Mountain near Silverton. Also up to headwaters of Rio Grande
Sneffels outside Ouray towards Imogene Pass. Basins like Yankee Boy.
Thanks for the update. I did not go, and I guess I should have mentioned that. I did go to Arkansas for a few days last week instead. Many thanks for all the suggestions from everyone. I will keep it all in mind for 2023 though.
I'm wanting to see Bent's Fort, then west over to Montrose area, ride some of that, then head south. Other posts have mentioned roads in that area beside the $$ Highway, and I plan to ride some of them as well. Any experience with the weather in that general area, that time of year? I'm thinking I'll be border line with the colder temps of a morning? Chances of snow?
Thanks.
Right now is "monsoon" season here, so plenty of chances for rain and other weather that may hamper a good ride, coupled with high temps in the 80s-90s at the height of the day. So, be prepared for both. Sounds like you're already planning on the rides I'm wanting to hit up in that area.
