Default Sturgis in September

I am thinking about doing a trip from my home state of Missouri to the Sturgis SD area the 2nd week of September and was hoping to get some suggestions on where to stay. Is it best to stay in one spot and return there each night or just wing it and stay different places each night. This will be my first long road trip and will be going solo ( unless anyone else wants to tag along lol ). I’d like to do as many of the best rides as possible. I’ll have about a week to ride once I get there. Anyone familiar with the weather in that area in September? If anyone has recommendations I’d be thankful to hear them.

Hill City is in the middle of everything, a good place to stay. I do all my riding from there when I am up there. Weather should be perfect. Bring a jacket, that time of year it'll cool off at night quite a bit.

IMO it all depends on what you're planning on doing and seeing.

If you're planning on going as far west to the Devils Tower I'd suggest that you may want to look into staying in Deadwood, Spearfish(SD) or possibly Sundance, WY.

Hill City is a great suggestion and location for visiting Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial. the Badlands Rapid City and Sturgis

I've been up there the week after Labor Day numerous times, this coming will be the first in probably 10 years that I won't be there. It quiets down quite a bit. Get out earlyish and you'll have the riding roads to yourself. Just about any gas station will have a map of the loops to ride.
Ride safe!

Expect overnight temps in the mid 40s until the sun gets up over the hills and trees then it will spike up quickly, Dress in layers so you can peel them off as needed day temps can be in the 80's or 60's, it's a crapshoot. We had 7" of snow 2 years ago on Labor Day.

There's really not much to see in Sturgis to be honest, the town goes back to sleep after the Mustang Rally

Except for last year when we went to the Rally, we always go the week after Labor Day. We rent a cabin a mile N of Keystone on Old Hill City Rd. Your bike is a lot safer next to your cabin than in a motel PL plus you have your own space. Prices also drop after Labor Day.

That Map is what you need, get one when you are close. Be somewhere in the middle of that and you see everything, all day rides. Good luck.

I am actually doing a job in Gillette Wyoming on the 13th then staying over to ride. Looks like I’ll be going right by the devils tower so I’ll definitely do that ride then work my way back toward one of the suggested places. I appreciate all the advice. Looking forward to riding that part of our beautiful country.

Planning on riding up early September as well. Staying in Deadwood.
But just riding the Black Hills for a day and moving on to WY/CO.
Enjoy!
