Fuel poll

I ran out of fuel once with one of my semi‘s… And that was back in the Day of mechanical fuel injectors… So even once you have fuel you have to bleed the system out… I hitchhiked into town, got a 5 gallon jug full of diesel, hitchhiked back out to the truck… Bleed the injectors, started the truck & had enough fuel to get to the closest pumps… There’s four hours of my life I’ll never get back for being downright stupid.

I never trust a fuel gauge. I go by the odometer. On my 2012 the miles remaining seems pretty accurate.
I have always kept a $20 bill in my tour pack, but a better back up is the app BPme. It is a phone app that lets you pay at any Amoco or BP with Bluetooth. 5cent/gallon discount too. I like it because I don’t have to take my wallet out of my tour pack.
I have never traveled out West, where you have to plan carefully. I would be hesitant to carry extra fuel. Gas is dangerous stuff. I have met people with hideous burns from gasoline fires. I am curious to see if see if any one recommends a safe container for motorcycle saddlebags.

Nope… Even when I went to Alaska I didn’t carry extra fuel… The rule of the north is that you never drive past the gas station that is open, has electricity, and has fuel… The next one might not have any of the three… The only time I’ve ever done that is when I had a sidecar… At highway speed’s fuel economy disappears

The gauge on the tank is supposed to show how much fuel is left and the last quarter tank is shown in red but the needle was right on that line leading me to believe I had a quarter tank of fuel left. Nope. I'd like to think this was a one time thing but in the back of my head I'm thinking...having a back-up can't hurt. Around town a single bottle will do...on long treks thru the backcountry I'll carry both just in case **** happens. Beats walking.
