Rolling Thunder NC 2 Annual Chapter Poker Run

I was involved in the planning again this year for our annual chapter poker run. With a threat of 50% to 70% chance of rain all day we were very fortunate. Not only did we NOT get wet, but we had a very good turn out for the ride considering the forecast.

It was a police escorted ride by two motorcycle officers with the Iredell County Sheriff’s office. These guys did a fantastic job. It was KSU at 10:30am. We rode 115 miles through four counties with three stops along the way. We ran into some wet roads at times where it had just rained ahead of us, but never on us. The radar looked terrible, but the moisture was staying up in the sky for the most part.

The ride started and ended at Tilley’s HD in Statesville. A Huge thank you to Derrick Tilley and his team for their support. We returned to hot dogs, chips and drinks. Then it was time to give cash prizes for best and worst hands. Next was the 50/50 cash drawing with $90.00 going to the winner. Then we had the drawing for a 12 ga pump shotgun. When they called my wife’s name I was shocked! Yes the Carolina Girl added another shotgun to her collection! She was so excited. It’s not real valuable but actually looks to be a nice shotgun. It’s a Churchill worth about $300.00. Not bad for a $5.00 ticket!

Enjoy the pictures.

God Bless America

It was 81 degrees when I got back home around 4pm.

Total ride for the day! Actual poker run was 115 miles.

All these bike and others were in the ride.

It was dry when we arrived. Rained about five minutes during our bathroom break. The parking lot was almost dry when we rolled out.

Remembering Don Tilley, the legion, the two wheel MACHINE. I learned long distance riding from Don.

Here are some pictures of a few of his bikes in the back of the shop at Tilley’s.

The man, the legion, the machine! Don Tilley

Check the catch pan out underneath this beauty.

Nice ride CR, and congrats to Mrs R on the big win. I almost hate to point out what everyone knows...the lucky winner rides shotgun on your bike.

2021 Carolina Challenge

12 Hours

455 Miles

Three Dealerships

Good Roads

Nice Weather

Bestest Girl

Good Food

11.595 Gallons 93 Octane (39.24 MPG two up at 3K RPM all day)

= Fun Day on the Road

We are into the Carolina Challenge. Knocked out Boneyard HD in Winterville, NC, Shelton’s HD in Goldsboro and Tobacco Road in Raleigh. Would have also picked up Riding High in High Point but I spent 1-1/2 hours talking with Shelton Davis the owner of Shelton’s HD. He and I are the same age, and he was very good friends with Don Tilley who was a legion and the guy that taught me long distance riding and a unique way to enjoy it. Shelton had so many interesting stories. It was like Don was still with us.

The Carolina Girl and I rolled out of our undisclosed bunker just west of the Twin Cities that Tobacco built at 0730 this morning. We stopped at K-Ville at the Union Cross exit for breakfast at Bojangles and fuel at Sheetz. Then it was back on I-40 east bound. It was 80 degrees when we left, we saw a high of 97 and it was 84 degrees when we returned home. The day was comfortable as the humidity was low.

We arrived at Boneyard HD a little before 12 noon. They had the music playing and the grill fired up doing chicken! This was the first time visiting this dealership. They had a good inventory of CVO’s a Pan America and a Revival #1489/1500. We enjoyed talking with the two ladies in motor clothes. They stamped our card, and the Carolina Girl bought a t-shirt and some poker chips.

It was nice two-lane roads from there to Goldsboro. Mostly lucky Highway 13! We stopped midway for fuel and had a fountain drink on ice and a snack! Arrived at Shelton’s HD around 2pm. Shelton was sitting at the desk as we entered, and he had seen us admiring his personal Revival out front. What caught our attention was the different 2-up seat. Yeah, this turns out to be a 100% original Harley seat from 1969. It sits a little lower, is narrower and you will notice the rear passenger floorboards. I think Shelton enjoyed the visit as much as we did. He is a country boy that has been on two wheels most all his life. He has a nice dealership and I picked up a t-shirt, sign, and poker chips before we left. I look forward to going back to visit with him again. He also had Revival #1351/1500 on the showroom floor for sale. The nice lady behind the counter stamped our Challenge card and off we go.

Original 1969 Harley Seat, two up with passenger floow boards.

Shelton Davis, the Owner

We are behind our schedule at this point and who really cares right? Screw it and just RIDE! We headed toward Raleigh on Hwy 70 with Tobacco Road HD as our next destination. The Temp-O-Meter was registering 97 degrees, but with low humidity and a nice breeze it was not uncomfortable. We arrived at TRHD around 3:45PM. Christina greeted us and stamped our card. She is a sweet girl that loves her job. It was nice visiting with her also. She had us pick what we wanted to drink. They had ice cold beer, soft drinks, and water. We enjoyed a Coke and checked out the inventory of bikes. The Carolina Girl found a shirt she had to have, and I picked up a few poker chips. There is a young lady at our church that collects chips and I get one for her everywhere we go.

I we were leaving the Carolina Girl said she was hungry. Since we were just three miles from “Locked & Loaded” we ran down there and enjoyed dinner. The band was sitting up outdoors and practicing. We ate inside in the AC and had a good meal. As we were leaving, I topped off the fuel tank and it was about 5:30pm with a two-hour ride home chasing the sun heading West.

The Temp-O-Meter was still showing 91 at 6pm as we rolled through Burlington on I-40 but it felt cooler than that. We cruised through Greensboro, Kernersville, Winston-Salem and then cross the mighty Yadkin River at Tanglewood / Bermuda Run and we would soon be home.

It was nice to be home and the Carolina Girl told be what a great time she had which made it all worthwhile.

The funny story for the day was me buying a Powerball lottery ticket. I placed it in my front shirt poker as we enjoyed a snack. We get on the highway, and it blows out of my pocket and over our heads. I see it flying in the rear-view mirror. I do a U-turn and see it still flying off to the side of the roads and oncoming traffic roll by. Much to my surprise I stop within five feet of it laying just under the guard rail and the Carolina Girl jumped off and picked it up. She put it in a safe place! LOL

The good Lord blessed us with safety, good weather and a great motorcycle. We have four of the sixteen dealerships checked off the 2021 Carolina Challenge. We are planning a three-day weekend to get the six along the Carolina coasts and Savannah. Stay tuned and thanks for riding along.

God Bless
