Rt.66 + Rockies
Hi, for 2018 I'm planning to do the 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica and then going north along the Pacific to Canada and coming back through the rockies to Quebec.
When is the best month to do this trip... July, August or September, I'm planning 3 weeks for this trip.
Thanks!

66 is nostalgic but the road is boring. Interesting places are few and far inbetween
Colorado, Arizona Indian country, Utah canyonlands, Hoover Dam and Sierra mountain passes are much more interesting if you haven’t already done that.
July is ok for the CO Rockies and Sierras.
August is hot in desert and Death Valley. They still dont have a date for opening PCH around Big Sur.
Be sure and check road construction and be flexible in choosing your routes.

I have been up and down the coast several times ..... The best way to see the Pacific Coast is South, and in early September. fog in June/July can be an issue. Heading south the view is ahead, and to your right. Also, the pullouts are on your right and you don’t have to cross traffic to get to them. Rent a dune buggy around Florence in the Dunes.

As stated Rte 66 has some highlights, but I found it to be more depressing than fun (too many ruins of a time gone by). Rocky Mtn should be good in July, but stanger this do happen. PCH last I heard was closed South of Monterey from a landslide. Utah has some fantastic sights, Monument Valley, Zion, Arches and Bryce Canyon to name a few. Also 550 (Million Dollar Hwy) from Durango to Montrose, Colorado is a great ride.

July and August for sure.
The California coast has fog till after lunch.
There are so many good roads to take in the areas you plan to ride to but if I was going to do 1 road to the coast it would be Highway 36 in Northern California.
The best road in the Sierras,North to South is the 49er trail, highway 49.
