Day Trip -- West Virginia Panhandle
Amazing weather for December...I think it may have reached 70 in some parts of the Mid-Atlantic. I took the Dyna out into the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. First I went south into Virginia and picked up Rt. 9, which runs from just west of Leesburg northwest towards Berkeley Springs. It's a very nice road, through nice farm country and quaint villages. This is Hillsboro, VA:
There's a bit of highway riding once you cross into West Virginia, but west of Martinsburg Rt. 9 becomes a winding two-way road again. Mostly good riding from there all the way to Berkeley Springs, where some eccentric built a castle for himself (back in the early 20th Century, I think).
It's actually a bit tricky to photograph the castle...I found the best vantage I could without stopping for too long. From Berkeley Springs, Rt. 9 continues west to the overlook at Prospect Peak:
There is a wayside inn there which seems to be popular with bikers. I've never stopped to dine, though, so I don't know how it is? Any WV friends know?
From the peak, continued west on Rt. 9, then 29 S, then 127 E back towards Winchester. Good roads all. Woods, hills, and farms.
Your humble correspondent...there was talk in another thread about tank tops. It wasn't that warm, and probably not worthwhile in any case. Cheers!
