California to Kansas?

I drove over the road for years. I-80 is awesome. I also like HWY 50 from Fernley NV to the junction of I-15/I-70 in Utah, then over the very scenic ride through the mountains of Colorado where I live.
Now if your trying to do this trip with a 2.2 gallon peanut gas tank, you might want to rent a different bike.

If I wanted to do the ride to Kansas directly and relatively quickly, I would probably pick up 50 in Sacramento and take it through Nevada and then pick up I70 in Utah and continue on 70 through Colorado and Utah. I70 through Utah is spectacular, maybe the most scenic Interstate in the country (ymmv). I70 though Colorado is nice, too. If you have extra time, spend it in Colorado exploring some of the high mountain passes.
Thanks for your suggestion...I'll look at this as an optional route. I'm getting pumpped again abou this trip going solo!!!

You can do the route I suggested going either way. If you want to visit SLC, then you'd have to take 80 across Nevada either way. One thing to check is the temperatures in Utah. Southern Utah, along I70 averages about 96 in July. That's tolerable. But one time I crossed southern Utah on the way back from Sturgis and the temp in Delta, UT was 106 that day! Not good. So be prepared to vary your route according to the temperatures you are likely to hit.

Any particular hotels/motels I should stay clear of on the 50/I70 route?

I don't remember the specific motels where I stayed but I usually stay in either a Best Western or Motel 6 level of place. In the middle of Nevada I remember all the motels were family run kinds of places, and fairly shabby looking.
