Default What could be the problem?

Okay. So I attempted to start it. It fired up. I revved it a little. I let go of the throttle. And then it like idled down till it died.
I attempted to start it again. It backfired. And the carb popped off the exhaust manifold. This is because I didn’t have a breather attached. But it will not start now? Also. The lead wire from the positive side of the battery to the regulator. Was so hot the coating started to melt. Can someone tell me what to check. Sand or repair so I don’t screw this up beyond repair. 2000 Sportster 1200custom. I’d appreciate any positive feedback.
