My 1991 sportster 1200 takes off fine and runs smooth, but when I try to shift into 2nd gear it won't grab and I can hear a whiney/grind. but then I can shift up to 3rd gear no problem. only 2nd gear wont engage.

 

Sounds like the dog teeth on the second gear are worn or broken, one way to find out, pull out the gear set.
