RE: primarary chain adjustment
well, I adjusted it keeping the socket on the nut. the only way I had to measure the play is stick a tape measure on the underneath side of the top of the chain and push up noting the starting and stopping point. Nearest I can tell, Im just under 5/8 cold. if your under 5/8, will it be too tight? if I left it where it was it would be just over 7/8 but it was starting to clunk louder when shifting. havent tried it yet, its raining and probally all week till the weekend.
will the clutch adjustment help the shifting noise? I have 15,000 miles and this is the first time I have done the service myself and thats the only job I havent takeled yet, you know how it is when your unsure. The service manual helps out alot though but I still have the unsure issue...LOL

IMO, It's a lot easier to pull off the whole outer cover and have the working area and sightlines. Yeah it costs an extra gasket and a few more minutes, but it allows complete internal inspection, so you can check the sprockets, starter jackshaft, clutch basket for cracks, wear on the compensating sprocket etc.
