Difficulties changing from first to neutral

Difficulties changing from first to neutral
Rding along one day and found that suddenly there was a drag in my clutch. adjusted it and ok. Happened again some weeks later. Adjusted it and seemd ok except for the occasional looking for the neutral from first gear. The other week it was more sudden. Had difficulties changing some gears, especialy up and hard to get neutral ones more.
Took it in to have it fixed. Had gearbox lever mechanism adjusted and was told ifI still had probs with getting it in to neutral that it could be the Clutch.
I am puzzled on one thing. I can adjust the thing to get plenty of free travel to a point where the Clutch will slip and gears are going in much better, still the neutral is a bother.
With so much fee play and possibly, should I then not be able to shift it in neutral just the same? I can understand if it was draging that it would do this but it is not draging no more.
Any ideas?

RE: Difficulties changing from first to neutral
I had a similar problem just after I changed the gearbox oil from the old Semi-Synthetic (which is no longer available) to the new Formula+ (which is the replacement). It felt like the clutch was dragging. I drained out the Formula+ from the gearbox and replaced it with Red Line Heavy Shockproof. Problem solved. Conclusion: You need a gearbox oil in the gearbox.

RE: Difficulties changing from first to neutral
Too much freeplay in the clutch cable will result in the clutch not completly disengaging. This can cause hard shifting and premature clutch wear. Almost all new clutches will need to be readjusted after a few hundred miles. Once they have settled in, they go a long time before needing another adjustment. Don

RE: Difficulties changing from first to neutral
Lot's of folks have trouble with 1st to neutral on all of the harleys I have heard about.
A trick, or practice, offered is to put light pressure on the gear lever in 1st and rev the engine slightly and it will slip in. Works all the time for my 96 EGC and it's the only way my wife gets her 01 EGC into neutral
