Default Low End Knock

I mentioned a while back that I had a low end knock on my '05 Standard. Got it to the HD house yesterday and it turned out to be a loose compensator sprocket nut in the primary. Even though it was Saturday, they got it in and fixed it, all warranty work. It helped me a lot as the bike is my main transportation to work.

Don't know why there is so many of these compensator nuts coming loose lately, I think the factory is slacking off, but that's old news Glad to see you're up and running again.

Where is this famous compensator nut? I had the primary cover off yesterday and was trying to figure it out. It was too freaking hot to be farting around, so I ended up moving on...

If you look at the two pulleys in the primary case with the chain wrapping around them , it is the front pulley (alternator) that has the compensator nut in the middle of it.

Thanks...I was looking for some nut to be hanging down from somewhere...

At 10K when I do the inner primary in CHROME, I'll take a gander.

Bill / Mac,

The guy at the Harley house told me that HD has revised the torque specs on the nut. Apparently a result of them loosening. He said they have the problem quite often.

If you look in the tech tips section in the DIY forum , you'll find it posted there if you're interested in seeing the difference.

HMMMM lets see in 03 HD got cheap and went to a roller bearing on the pto side. After that cranks start to fail, and now there are loose comp nuts. ANyone but me see a connection witht the crank waling in the case and the comp nut coming loose. The comp nut set crank end play. SO hd has a issue with excessive end play on the crank and nut is coming loose so scew it increase tq and see what happens. I will tell you , it is flexing the case , end play is 1-5 thou 2.5 being the sweet spot. I see anywhere from 4-28!!! end play no wonder the nut comes loose and the cranks smoke the bearing.
