I'm thinking about upgrading to the SE Hydraulic Cam Plate this winter if I can afford it. How difficult is this project to do? I'm no mechanic genius but I like working with my hands so I did all my cosmetic upgrades myself and do my own maintenance. What parts would I need or is there a kit I can buy? I have all the basic tools and access to air tools but other then that are there any special tools I need or should buy?
Like Kaycee says, not a difficult job at all. You really don't need special tools; rent a blind hole puller with the correct size collet to pull the inner cam bearings and, if replacing cams, use one of the cams that is being repaced to install the new Torrington inner cam bearings. Freeze them, apply some assembly lube to the bearing race and the bearing bore and they will bump right in.
I would not use the OEM plate if installing aftermarket or more aggressive cams. The outer cam journals ride in a bore in the parent material of the cam plate. I have seen them show excessive wear in a few thousand miles. The billet plate is the way to go; the outer cam journals ride in bronze bushings.
You should get the service model for your bike; best tool in the box.
