Default Inner primary replacement

Anyone have any experience exchanging the exisiting inner primary cover with a chrome primary? 2002 RK. I am mechanically inclined, but is this a project better left to the dealer?

It isnt that tough of a job. It took me about 3 hours. You need to have a shop manual and it helps to have an impact gun. If you follow the instructions, it is relatively easy and much cheaper. The dealer told me that the labor charge to perform this job would be about $300.

You shouldnt use an impact gun on the compensator nut. Could damage stator. You will need an 1 1/4" socket for the comp nut. It is a right hand thread and the clutch will be left hand. loosen the chain adjuster befor you start trying to loosen comp nut. put a small block of woof under the adjuster to support it.

So true on the impact.

There should be no need for supporting the show. When you properly place the "barbie stairs" all the tension is on the top strand when loosening and tightening both nuts. If you have tension across the show on the bottom strand, you can crack it without knowing it - it is meant to take up slack, not load.

Where can I get this block of "woof" you describe?

I would add to others reading this thread, there is a new "primary drive locking tool" for 07 softails. You are not to use "Barbie stairs"

I guess I get a little nervous when it comes to the drive train.....seal leaks, major damage if I screw something up, etc.....I am among the majority in not wanting all my dough to go to the stealership, but their labor rates are at half right now due to minnesota cold. They quoted me $150 inclusive of necessary seals and they will come pick it up at the house. Is it worth saving the $150 or should I bite the bullet and let em do it? I do not yet have a manual so that may be $30 or $40 right from the get go. Thoughts?

Ive changed HUNDREDS of primarys! You just gotta ask yourself.....do you want to learn some more technical knowledge about your ride? Its REALLY EASY for most people to perform the work. You need a manual anyway for future maintanence right? GO with your gut. GOOD LUCK
