Default 1986 Softale Belt replacement

I decided to replace my broken belt, pulled the case and am now looking at the clutch and chain drive. Pulled chain tensioner and wonder if i can pull the clutch in whole, loosen the inside plate enough to replace the belt.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you!

You cannot simply remove the clutch and loosen the inner primary cover to replace the belt, because the mainshaft extends all the way through the inner primary and into the clutch hub.

The clutch, compensator and entire primary cover must be removed.

Not trying to be a smart alek, but this is one job you don`t want to do working blind.

There are too many possible pitfalls in this job, don`t jump into it without a service manual.

Also, if it is the original pulley, you should consider the upgraded pulley configuration that came out in `94, which includes a new design pulley, lock, nut, spacer and seal.

Default Thanks for the confirmation

Thanks for the direction. I ma going to reassemble and take it to the Harley dealer.

I don;t have the manual and quite frankly, do nto have the time to do it and with the possible problems from what little knowlege I have, not worth the risk.

Now I know why the dealer quoted $ 350.00 to do the job.

Thanks again for yuour help.

Hope I didn`t discourage you from doing the job yourself. That was not my intention.

Don`t be a stranger to the forum, and enjoy that bike, you have a great one.
