Default Help IDS

My '07 Roadking has developed a discrepancy related to a "missing" spacer between the sprocket/pulley and the wheel. The IDS was installed by a service center in a dealer with a great reputation. But my bike was the very first IDS they installed (back in '07). Now, 30K miles later and at another dealer I am informed the spacer between the sprocket and the road wheel is missing. Further, the dealer advises that the sprocket and related IDS needs to be replaced because of the misalignment caused by the missing spacer. The new part, a kit, includes two spacers. I sure would like to know if the early kits had a spacer between the sprocket and the wheel and if there were/are any bulletins that may cover this type of failure.

BTW, this missing spacer and related problem was only brought to light after the belt guard started to rub on the sprocket. It occurred on the way home from the 30K service. The scraping started after 10 miles of freeway driving and then about 4 blocks of city streets. The bike was trailered back to the dealer the next day.

Mine was installed in early '08 and has the bowl bolted directly to the wheel. Then the big spacer goes between the bowl and the sprocket. Then there is a small spacer, more like a washer, that goes between the outside of the sprocket and the swingarm. This is from memory, but I am reasonably sure it is correct. I have the .pdf file from the original installation instructions here somewhere if you want them uploaded.

Found them, right here.

There are two models of the drive, early and present model.

This should help determine which one you have.

Yes, there are 2 spacers. If you do have to replace everything I suggest going to the 68T Japanese Sportster pulley. Won't cost you anything more and it's a nice upgrade equaling the gearing on the newer bikes. No need to change belts.

Sefferdog thanks for the info. I dont see a spacer between the pulley and the wheel in the kit. I will take the PDF down to the dealer and ask which spacer was left out. Thanks a lot.

Ajayrk, thanks for those two part break downs. I don't see a spacer between the pully and the wheel in either of these. Really seems interesting.

NVSTEVE, I look at both of the sites ajayrk posted and the Harley orginal "how to do it" posted by SEFFERDOG and I don't see a spacer between the wheel and the pulley. What am I missing? As far as optional sprockets go there is only ONE Harley replacement. And it is included with the kit (compensator, cup, sprocket etc) so I am told. I actually went down to the dealer to see if there was a chrome option available but there was not. At this point the 68T Japanese Sportster pulley is out of the question as the parts were ordered last night. WHERE IS THE SPACER ON THE DIAGRAM, WHAT IS THE NUMBER?? Thanks for the help.

Here is some more reading and a pic. The pic shows both spacers on this as well.

The bowl, pn 40560-05, bolts directly to the wheel, no spacer. The pulley slips over the bowl with a spacer, pn 11846, in between it and the bowl. The other spacer, pn 11844, fits between the outside of the pulley and the swingarm. There are definitely two spacers.

I think the last two posts answered your question but I will see if I can find the instruction sheet if not. If at all possible I would re-think the 68T option. Very nice improvement.
