Default Aftermarket Ring and Pinion Gear Set

I'm gonna look into purchasing a ring and pinion gear set with the pre 94' ratio or whatever is equivalent. I did some searching on this site and haven't really found any suggestions as far as what brand is good or how many comnpanys out there actually make this set. So my question is what is a good brand to purchase? Any pros or cons? Any links to websites would be nice. The only one I found was the kit from Compu-Fire.

I just chewed up 2 stock pinion gears with probably less than 3-4 hours on the bike. Time to look into somethig else.

Harleys don't have a pinion gear. A pinion gear changes direction of motion.

What gear have you worn out? Before changing the gear, you need to figure what went wrong and why. Fix that first or you'll be right back where you started.

I'm talking aboutthe pinion gear on the starter. It seems to be a common problem after doing some research.

Like this kit:

Yeah, you really need to be looking in to the real problem. Something isn't aligned correctly somewhere. On my '97, I never changed them in 45K miles. It was also my daily commuter bike. If you just replace the gears, you'll be doing it again in a week.

the compu-fire kit is a god one but like the other post tearing up that gear is not a real problem you most have another problem and are you sure you tore the gear up if the starter clutch goes bad it sounds alot like grinding gears when you try to start it so check it first if it is the starter clutch the all ***** one is a really nice peice

Hmmm maybe it is something else tha's not aligned correctly? I just replaced the starter about 4 weeks ago with an all ***** starter because my stock starter took a crap. I put the starter back on just like I took the old one off. But I'll look into it some more.

Thanks for your help

That's the problem. The starter is sitting about 1-2mm too low. Just low enough to cause the gears to bind.

I'm going to pull the starter back off and look into it. Maybe I didn't pay enough attention but I didn't think the starter could be placed in different positions. In other words I thought the starter could only bolt up in the same position.

I love trial and error...[sm=headbang.gif]

The air gap between the gears is most likely where the trouble lies you may need to modify the jack shaft
