Unhappy Primary Chain Slap

Replaced my final drive belt that snapped at 51,000 miles (2007 Softail Deluxe). When I was in the Primary noticed that the primary chain had been hitting the housing just below the front Drive Sprocket before it bends up towards the front of Auto Tensioner. The tensioner had only a small amount of wear but decided to change it since I had it open just incase it was the cause. Grinded down the maring so I would know if any new issues came about that I would know if it was new or not. Rode for a couple days and started hearing chain slap again. Took the cover off and new marks on the housing. Checked the shaft bearing between Tranny and Clutch basket for play and could not see any. Same with Drive shaft and Torque compensator, did not see any play. Even ran the bike for 2 minutes with primary cover off to see if I could recreate problem. Only thing I accomplished was oil all over floor and bike. New Auto tensioner working fine. Any Ideas?

Hey Did you you ever get a response to this? I am having a similar problem, but I decided to replace the tensioner with a Soho Hot bikes set up. Yet, still have a slapping coming from the primary. It looks like the chain was hitting right below the front compensator.I have a 2009 Softail. Please help.

Might be time for a new chain, they do stretch. With new chain, try the Hayden M-6 chain tensioner.

Wear between the chain rollers cause it to lengthen (stretch). The degree of slack can be measured with the outer primary off. (5/8" to 7/8")

Excessive wear makes it difficult for the auto tensioner to work (tight in some areas-loose in others) - hand rotate the engine and take several measurements.

It could be a good idea to disconnect the battery if you're dickin around in the primary.

Just had a bike in the shop with the same problem. Check the run out on the crankshaft with a dial indicator. This one had .034 runout with the spec for this model 2003 Softail being .002
