Compensator and clutch question

Default Compensator and clutch question

I have a 2003 FLHTI. I took the primary cover off to check the compensator nut. The nut is not noticeably loose, unfortunately I don't have a socket that large. My 1st question is when the comp bolt is loose like many people have found, is is loose my hand or with a wrench? My second question is that I was looking over everything inside and wiggled my clutch basket. I has holding the starter ring and found that the clutch assay would wiggle just a tad. Is it normal for this to move a very little bit? If not what could be the issue? Thanks guys!

Buy the socket from Sears or the like and torque the compensator nut to proper specs as outlined in the updated service bulletin. Do it before it comes totally loose and wreaks havoc with your primary cover. How much wiggle do you consider a tad? Minor movement or ?

remember, both the comp nut and the clutch hub nut, are assembled with red lock tite. so if you turn them to check if they are loose, and they turn, you will need to remove them and re lock tite them. or they will come loose for sure. ask me how i know?

I would say less than 1/16th of an inch play while holding the starter ring. You can barley feel it but is does move a little. While im in the primary I would like to address it if it is a problem. Thanks for the help!

Tips that come from ones personal experiences are always the best! If I pull the compensator bolt out will the compensator come apart or is it ok to just pull the bolt,clean it and reinstall with some red? Thanks!

I would venture to say if the compensator nut is not visually loose it is more than likely ok.

As for the clutch basket movement, a slight rotational movement is perfectly normal. Any movement other than that would indicate a problem.
