Default '78 Shovelhead lurches

My Dad has a gorgeous '78 shovel that I was thinking about buying, but it lunches in 2nd gear. Any ideas as to what might cause the lurching? Thanks

The cup inside the compensator is probably worn and there isn't enough spring pressure to dampen the power stroke. Replace the cup.

Or the chain is loose or stretched in one place.
