starting problems "please help"
hey guys, this is my first post here, i just found about this site from a friend. what an awsome place. well heres the problem i am having which has truned into a nightmare. i recently purschased a 92 fat boy a few months ago which is completely decked out. the bike is powered by a patrick racing 125 inch motor which had a bout 50 miles on it and still had the original harley 5 speed in it. i decided to change out the original transmission because i was arfaid that it would end up comining apart and causing possilbe engine damage because of the amount of power the motor puts out. heres where the problems started. the transmission was replaced with a baker 6 speed in which a hydruallic clutch was added. the problem were having is that motor is slow to turn over, and after about 4 or 5 revloutions the battery goes dead because of the compression (not sure if because of compression). so we replaced the starter to a high-out put one. it will start 1 one out of 3 times. then makes a loud bang and rips the teeth off the ring gear and sort of rolls the teeth on the primary gear. then i was told that pre 94 harleys had problems starting and the best thing to do is update the primary kit. so went ahead and updated the whole primary kit. guess what yesterday went to start it turns over a few times then ended up ripping the teeth off the ring gear again. keep in mind that iam not doing this work myslef, a very very very reputable company in the business which i dont want to name yet installed the transmission and primary kit along with hydrullaic clutch. at this point they are speechless and dont know what to do. i have alot of money in this bike and would appericate any input form you guys. and any good shops in the florida area. thanks for all the support.

I don't know much about the engine manuf. but don't these have a compression release? (Not sure).
Also sounds like the motor isn't timed right but you say that the people working on it know what they are doing...
It's hard to start out in the middle of a custom and getting it up and working.

Pull the plugs and spin it over (which I assume any reputable shop would have done first) and that compession out of the picture. Assuming it will roll over with out plugs. Then check the compession with and with out the compression releases engaged to make sure they are working correctly. Eliminate the possibilities with the motor. Now if it won't roll over with out plugs, you got alot to check out dealing with the starter, tranny, clutch by pulling the belt or chain. Also parts might not mate up correctly and binding the primary system. Sorry this is one of those things you got to look at to be much help. Sometimes to find what's broke you have to eliminate everything that isn't. Good luck.

Then my money would be on something jamming your primary or your tranny... I've heard of a screw being dropped and it gets jammed into the primary chain/belt (wedged in the chain, embedded in the belt) causing the problem. I also think that the alignment of the tranny could be a place to look since it starts every third time then backfires. There would be some positions of the crank that would allow it to start and others that wouldn't with the tranny out of alignment. Same would be true if the tranny is locking up but I have never had a baker apart so I wouldn't know where to tell you to look.
Removing the plugs and primary cover/belt cover and walking the bike will tell you a lot. You can pin point the position of the primary that had the most bind and go from there.
Good luck. Sounds like a hot machine.

I ran into the exact same problem with a 110" motor. Once the plugs were out it spins great...
My engine has no compression releases, you may want to check to ensure the compression valves are working properly.
Anyway, I ended up buying a Spyke high torque atarter, that helped a little but did not fix the problem........I have a 4 speed trans with a kick, before I start the bike, I have to put some pressure on the kick to move the engine past the compression stroke.....it then fires right up......

can you roll the bike? try starting it with your clutch pulled it & if it starts do not!!!let the clutch back out insead turn it off. it sounds like your tranny is locked or installed improperly one thing you can do to tell this is to take your primary chain or belt off and then try to start it if it runs its your tranny
