Exclamation Name that noise...

I did a search and found quite a few topics on a "whirring" noise, however, through the numerous threads I read none of them seemed similar or close.

Here the details: 08 Night Train, 96 Cu in., Stage I mods, 11,100 miles

At idle and while moving (cold or hot) I hear this "whirring" sound that sounds like it is coming from the primary towards the front of it. If I pull in clutch the noise will disappear. The best way to describe the noise is: remember when you still had a bicycle with training wheels and if you hit that sweet spot over a mud puddle you could make a rooster tail of water and the noise it would make? It sounds like my primary chain is moving through the oil at warp speed while everything is moving at regular speed.

I've been a slacker and not had my 10K mile service done...may be a good place to start, huh? Really though...any ideas as to what it may be?

Thank you in advance....

in gear, or in neutral?
the only difference with the HD antiquated chain drive primary with the clutch in or out is the load on the "throwout bearing" everything else keeps on keeping on

in gear the mainshaft stops, with clutch pulled in, out of gear the mainshaft keeps turning with the clutch pulled in..

the sound you describe is unfamiler to me ..the only bicycle I remember is the one I had to stand on the porch to get on it .. then jump off to quit riding it

if it were the chain , it wouldnt stop as you pull the clutch in.
could be a tranny mainshaft bearing, or a "throwout bearing "

mention the noise to the mech , if you take it in for service , or inspect/push/pull on things when you have the primary off..

I have to say sounds like mainshaft bearing may be going out. If it has the auto chain tensioner it may have adjusted itself too tight and be causing it.

There is an easy to determine if it is the inner primary/mainshaft bearing.

If it is making the noise while the bike is in neutral, and the noise goes away when you pull in the clutch lever and drop it into gear.

Really hard to diagnose without being there, it could just be normal primary chain noise?
