Baker releases replacement helical 5th gear set for HD's "unique" sounding tranny:

Now, we all have our minds "right" and like the "unique" sound our tranny's make, and we know this trans was tested at Talla-freakin-dega, so it can't possibly have any problems, but Baker is now going to make a fortune fixing what ain't broke!

 

Leave it to the aftermarket industry & the consumer to clean this mess up. HD should have done it this way to begin with. But what else is new?

 

I guess HD didn't tell Bert Baker there wasn't anything wrong with the transmission.

That all was needed was to:
1) educate the '07 owners on how to ride
2) anything below 2500 RPMs was lugging
3) the sounds are normal
4) rotate different transmission oil each week
5) from HD customer service "Just ride it and enjoy it"

This new kit will only go after the 5th gear whine not the clatter in other gears.Complete gear set will be avavilable in spring.

 

Might want to hand your dealer a copy of this next time you get the ITS NORMAL line.

I sent some questions to Baker via their website:

I have an 07 Softail so I'm interested in your new F6F 5th gear kit.
A couple of questions however.
Does the 5 gear ratio change? And is that the reason for the Recal Box?
Is the Redesign of the trapdoor due to the thrust loads that the helical 5th
gear will generate?
Lastly can I share your answer with others?

The trap door change is for helical end loading of all the gears not just
the 5th change. The change to the helical 5th is the reason for the recal box
it reads different than the straight cut gear. And lastly yes tell everyone.


They did not directly answer whether the ratio was different, but if you count the teeth on the gears in the Baker website pictures you will see that they are different. Harley gear 43 teeth, Baker 39. This alone requires an ECM recal.

My 5th gear whines a little, but nowhere near enough to make me contemplate the teardown that this mod would require.

 

Called Baker it is at time of call $899.99 and it is not avalable yet but real soon they are finishing production
looks like even if you lug the engine some it will not clatter

 

Has anyone had success with this? I loved my dd6 and hate the cruise drive???

 

I am a baker dealer and don't have any info on that. Haven't had requests on that.
