Default Warm primary

I just purchased a 2008 Ultra with16000 miles, After a hundred miles the primary felt extremely hot, I went to pull the cover when I got home and the top bolt has been rounded out and I cannot pull it off, Any thoughts on getting it off and how hot does the primary cover usually get?
And I believe there is no other way to check the fluid than pull the cover right?

Some use a Dremel and cut a slot in the buggered screw for regular screwdriver removal while others drill the damaged screw a bit deeper then use a backout (just don't pound on the screw...that can distort the primary housing and then you're into bigger dollars).

Yes, the primary gets quite warm...but extremely hot might be a different issue.

Good luck!

I hope by cover you mean the round clutch cover and not the whole primary cover. Yes that is the only way to check the level. After reading a thread on hot primary covers I checked mine and it is to hot to hold your bare hand on. So I would say that is normal.

While were on the subject, I just upgraded to this 08 from an 04 and I noticed a different sound coming from the primary side kind of a whining type almost sounds like the similar noise of a supercharger belt whine, any insight if this is a normal sound and I am just being paranoid.

It could be your alternator. My shovelhead whined like that if the battery got low and the alternator had to work a little more than normal.

My Primary gets hot as well. I also stripped one of the bolts. I used a T-25 instead of a T-27.

What I did was drill a hole in the center of one of the bolts and used and easy-out/extractor to remove the bolt.

Problem solved I believe we all over complicated the solution to the rounded bolts. I took a 1/8 inch drill bit drilled a pilot hole then took a slightly larger one to it then again a slightly larger one drilled the head off and the took the cover off, and with a pair of pliers backed the stud out.
Thanks for all the help.
