Default hairline crack in inner primary

I have a really small crack in my inner primary, and its in a place where a small amount of some sealant should work. What can be used inside (or outside, as its in a hidden spot) to "seal" it? Several years back I had the same problem with another bike, and the mechanic at the time used some product, but he's deceased, and can't tell me what it was. I know regular epoxy won't work, but what will take the heat and primary lubricant?

JB Weld might be worth some investigation.

Too bad you have that 86 or another inner may not be too hard to find. They can be scarce for those middle 80's years.

I would not trust any "glue", but JB weld failing....I would take it off and have it welded. It's aluminum and any good welding shop can do that for you. I know....been there and done that. I had a clutch-hub break and knocked a hole in the bottom of mine. I had it welded-up and never had any problem with it.

I'm actually running 94-99 primaries, had to swap everything over to put in my 6 speed Ultima transmission. I used the JB Weld, looks perfect, no leaks. I didn't want to have them welded because they are chromed.

It is not all that easy (as you apparently know) to figure out what-will-fit-what. I did the opposite of you and had to yank-out a fried 6-speed and put a stock 5-speed back in my 99 Ultra. I found a low-mileage 2001 5-speed case-n-all at a very reasonable price and I could avoid all the pressing-in and pressing-out stuff from my stock tranny case....so I opted to just do a case-in-all change, because I had a stripped engine-to-tranny bolt hole (glued in at the factory that way) that I wanted to repair with an insert and had to pull the tranny to do that. Everything bolted right up.....until I tried to put my 99 inner on that 01 tranny. MOCO had rotated the mounting holes on the 01 and later models about 1/8th. inch. My 99 inner would not fit, so I had to get an 01 inner. When you start changing stuff...you really do have to keep good notes and also look very closely at the part numbers. Harley will make some small minor change to a part that is not even noticeable....but won't fit.

Ya, it does get a bit confusing, I bought my 1986 FXST brand new, upgraded the shocks to the 89 version when I had bike stripped to the frame and moved the transmissions frame mounts, put the 6 speed in last year and had to change primaries, clutch, front sprocket, starter, oil bucket and lines. It does confuse people, no one can figure out what year it is when they look at it unless they look very carefully, and know what to look for.
