I got an '86 Evo Sportster 883 converted to 1200 ten years ago. In 2002 I had my local dealer replace the gear shift shaft when it apparently broke, stuck in 3rd gear. Now, nine years later, the shifter has way too much play, can't hit neutral. I'm afraid it's gonna fail out on the road this season. Anyone have any insight on this? Since I had the dealer replace the shaft in '02, I didn't get to learn anything about the inner workings of the tranny. I have the repair manual and will do the work myself. I just don't know how detailed the fix will be... Thanks!
