2000 softail transmission gears
Hello:
I hope I'm doing this right. If not somebody will let me know.
I have a complete set of 2000 softail transmission gears, and want to know if I can install them in a 1998 softail case. I'm not sure if I have to change the main shaft or not. and I'm prety sure I have to use a the 1998 trapdoor and use the 2000 style clutch hub. Starting from scratch. and wondering if there is anything I need to be aware of. Not to hip on what fits what.
Thanks

The gearset will work in your `98 case, no need to change the mainshaft.
Use new bearings in the trap door, because removing the old shafts from the bearings cross loads them, so they are scrap.
Since you will be pressing the main drive gear out of the big ball bearing (left side of trans) the big ball bearing must also be replaced due to cross loading.
While the transmission is apart, inspect the splines on the shifter shaft, if the shifter shaft/shift pawl looks ok, replace both springs on the shifter pawl.
You do not have to use a 2000 clutch hub, you have lots of choices there, that will drop right in.
