34 Tooth Final Drive Pulleys to Lower RPM's

RE: 34 Tooth Final Drive Pulleys to Lower RPM's
I'm late on the issue, but I'm running a 34T Andrews on my 2000 FLSTS, easy. Needed a belt change anyway, so put one on. A little closer on the adjustment,(but no problem), mileage went up, better for distance ('bout 105K on the machine now), not a big problem on hills(I live in NH go to White Mts., Green Mts. & Cape Breton, NS, a lot) And it's a cheaper out than a 6 speed(IMHO). As far as speedo readings are concerned, I use a Garmin GPS-V that'll give me a mph readout in US, and a kph in Canada so's that's no big thing either!

Each to his own but dropping final drive across the board by more than 10% wouldn't work for me; give up too much in the first four gears. Stock gearing will have you running +/-72mph at 3000 rpms. Converting secondary gearing to 34/65 pulleys will have you running +/-82mph at 3000 rpms but, IMHO, giving up too much torque and acceleration in the first four gears.
There is an in between option that is not often discussed on any of the H-D forums I visit; that's the Twist Gear from Johnson Engineering.
http://www.twistgear.net/index.html
The TG one piece gear/countershaft and helical cut main gear convert the standard TC five speed into a close ratio four speed for more torque and acceleration in the first four gears while retaining the stock 1:1 gearing in 5th. By combining a 34T trans pulley with the TG, reduce the torque mulitplier in the first four gears by about 50% of what the 32T trans pulley will produce but still having more than stock and maintaining close ratios between the first four gears but pick some cruise speed rpm reduction in 5th; 3000rpm will have you running +/-78mph at 3000rpms.
IIRC, the kit runs $495 and includes everthing you need for the conversion, i.e., bearings, seals, main gear and counter shaft. Install would be basically a 5th gear replacement.
Just thought I would throw the Twist Gear into the mix. It's a very intersting and cost effective alternative to a six speed transmision.

I put a 34T tranny pulley (sprocket) on my 2000 Fatboy. Love it. Recommend it. I don't race and could care less if I have to slip the clutch a little more. I also thought 1st gear on a FL was too low for me anyway.
I ride 100 miles a day to/from work on freeways. I don't shift to 5th until around 65 Mph anymore as before I would be in 5th at 65 Mph and still want to shift. That's what it has done for me. In fact, I can go 75 Mph all day long and not think about needing to shift. Cost me 4 hours of work and $160 (gear and gaskets, seals) not including a tranny sprocket wrench $75 from George's Garage.

on my '11 police road king, I went the other way and put a 30T trike pulley going from 2.89:1 to 3.06:1 (just like the new RoadGlide ST)
this gives me a more usable 1st and better acceleration - the bike is happier and I still run 90+ out west.
I found on my old 96 CI evo, that under bad headwinds i got better mileage at 70 in fifth, than 70 in sixth. I think most bikes are WAY overgeared. the big motors just dont feel like you are lugging them, but you are.
In the mountains, if I keep the 103 roadking spinning from 3 -3500RMs, up and down hill, I get a lot better mileage than I did before the gearing change.
Less RPM is nat always your friend
